Are you ready for change? Are you smelling the cheese?
If there's one thing we all know, it's that change is inevitable. It's true for business, and it's true for life. Additionally, if there's one thing we've observed after working with clients in all sorts of industries and all sorts of businesses, it's that some adapt faster than others. We've also found that those who adapt faster inevitably move faster, have more success, and are just plain happier. Dr. Spencer Johnson's, "Who Moved My Cheese" is a typical business school read, and it's obvious as to why. By creating a parable of two mice and two men always on the hunt for cheese, Johnson is able to illustrate how some are so adverse to change that they miss out on what good can come of it, while others (though potentially hesitant at first) push past the fear of the unknown to embrace change and find success.
The parable is easy to follow, but the advice is deep. Tenants such as "there's always more success to be had", and "don't rest on your laurels" are easy to find in the story. As well as "enjoy the success you have, but always be searching for what's next". While you'll undoubtedly will never want to read the word "cheese" again, the book is a quick one and definitely on our must read list.
